ETSI\u00a0 (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a European Standards Organization (ESO), which is the recognized regional standards body dealing with telecommunications, broadcasting and other electronic communications networks and services.<\/p><p>Below find some statements of ETSI:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8bd9c6f e-grid e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"8bd9c6f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-45b596d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"45b596d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>What is a Standard?<br \/><\/strong><\/p><p>A standard is a document that provides rules or guidelines to achieve order in a given context.<\/p><p>ETSI\u2019s rules for drafting standards\u00a0amplify this a little: \u201c<strong>a document, established by consensus and approved by a recognized body, that provides, for common and repeated use, rules, guidelines or characteristics for activities or their results, aimed at the achievement of the optimum degree of order in a given context<\/strong>\u201d. (Derived from ISO\/IEC Guide 2:1996, definition 3.2)<\/p><p>Standards have special significance in the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which is ETSI&#8217;s area of competence:<\/p><ul><li>addressing needs for interconnection and\u00a0interoperability which is particularly important for\u00a0open markets, where mobile users can \u2018mix and match\u2019 equipment and services, and where suppliers can benefit from economies of scale<\/li><li>important for ensuring safety, reliability and environmental care<\/li><li>referenced by\u00a0regulators and legislators for protecting user and business interests, and in support of government policies<\/li><\/ul><p>Standards bring numerous\u00a0benefits\u00a0to business and society. ETSI is a recognized European Standardization Organization and it encourages global adoption of its standards where appropriate. Many ETSI standards are used worldwide.<\/p><p>Standards may be used on a voluntary basis, or made mandatory by company policy, national or international regulation, or by law.<\/p><p>In Europe there are three different categories of standard:<\/p><ul><li><strong>International standard\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 adopted by an international standardization organization<\/li><li><strong>European standard\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 adopted by a European standardization body<\/li><li><strong>National standard\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 \u00a0adopted by a national standardization body and made available to the public<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95036ff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95036ff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Benefits of Standards<br \/><\/strong><\/p><p>We use standards every day, in all aspects of our daily lives \u2013 in communications, media, healthcare, food, transport, construction, furniture, energy\u2026<\/p><p>Standards provide:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Safety and reliability<\/strong>\u2013 raising user confidence, increasing sales and the take-up of new technologies<\/li><li><strong>Support of government policies and legislation<\/strong>\u2013 Standards are frequently referenced by\u00a0regulators\u00a0and legislators for protecting user and business interests, and to support government policies, for example the European Union&#8217;s policy for a\u00a0Single Market<\/li><li><strong>Interoperability<\/strong>\u2013 the ability of devices working together<\/li><li><strong>Business benefits<\/strong>:<ul><li>Open\u00a0<strong>market access<\/strong><\/li><li>Provide<strong>\u00a0economies of scale<\/strong><\/li><li>Encourage\u00a0<strong>innovation<\/strong><\/li><li>Increase\u00a0<strong>awareness<\/strong>\u00a0of technical developments and initiatives<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>Consumer choice\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; standards provide the\u00a0<strong>foundation for new features<\/strong>\u00a0and options, contributing to the enhancement of our daily lives. Mass production based on standards provides a greater variety of accessible products to consumers.<\/li><\/ul><p>A good example of the power of standardization is the\u00a0<strong>GSM<sup>TM<\/sup><\/strong>\u00a0mobile communication technology and its successors (<strong>3G, 4G, 5G<\/strong>&#8230;), truly global phenomena, in which ETSI has and is still playing a leading role.
